The programme entitled New Scenarios of Digital Vulnerability: Media Literacy for an Inclusive Society, PROVULDIG2-CM, Ref.: H2019/HUM-5775, is a combination of institutional endeavour, information dissemination, and research activity carried out by a consortium of six research groups consolidated within the following universities in Madrid: CEU San Pablo University, Rey Juan Carlos University, Complutense University of Madrid, and Villanueva University.
PROVULDIG2-CM, Ref.: H2019/HUM-5775 is a network of researchers who work in the following areas:
- New digital vulnerabilities and instruments to encourage social inclusion of especially vulnerable groups, such as children, adolescents, young adults and the elderly.
- Scientific study focusing on fake news and its influence on the collective construction of reality.
- Analysis of the interaction, discourse, and data related to adolescents in the social media.
- The study of cyber-violence in the Autonomous Region of Madrid.
- Challenges faced by the elderly with regard to political participation in the digital environment.
In a context of the digital transformation of contemporary society, and after years of work on lines of research related to vulnerability among social groups, the PROVULDIG consortium was launched, from which the current PROVULDIG 2 is an outgrowth. Therefore, the most recent precedent of the PROVULDIG 2 consortium is the original PROVULDIG-CM programme (2016-2019, Ref. H2015/HUM3434), of which five of the six groups that comprise the current PROVULDIG-2 were members.
Although the focus of the PROVULDIG consortium has been to analyse the challenges experienced by certain social groups who are particularly vulnerable to digital culture, such as children, adolescents, young people and the elderly, its origins date back to the beginning of the 21st century with the awarding of the National Plan Research Project entitled “Childhood and Television: Children’s Programming and Television Anomie” (1999-2002), coordinated by UCM full professor Javier Fernández del Moral. Other participants in the programme included UCM full professors Luis Núñez Ladevéze and Ricardo Pérez Amat.
For more than a decade, these professors were the Principal Investigators of 4 groups in the current consortium. The move by Professor Núñez Ladevéze to CEU San Pablo University led to the creation of the CEICIN research group at CEU, among other operations carried out. Likewise, the relocation of Professor Pérez Amat to the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos led the creation of the GICOMSOC group.
Having common scientific concerns, these groups eventually formed a network of researchers that resulted in the Coordinated Programme on Children and Television (PROCOTIN, 2008-2011), which was the predecessor of PROVULDIG-CM (2016-2019). The latter, as previously mentioned, is the antecedent to the current PROVULDIG 2 programme (2020-2022).
All of these objectives are aimed at taking action related to social inclusion, protecting minors, promoting audience empowerment through media literacy, and fostering entrepreneurship among youth.
To serve as a centre for the exchange of knowledge between researchers interested in this subject, and as a point of reference for young researchers who intend to direct their academic careers toward the field of communication and vulnerable audiences.
Information vulnerability. Research on fake news and its influence on the collective construction of reality.
Development of networks to analyse the interaction, discourse and data related to adolescents in social media.
Research on cyber-violence against girls, adolescents and young women in the Autonomous Region of Madrid.
Audience empowerment: child protection and media literacy
Promotion and improvement of awareness and participation of elderly people in the political debate through various digital tools.
Employment of young people in the digital ecosystem: opportunities and vulnerabilities for labour inclusion.
Media literacy for social inclusion.

Each group works and participates autonomously in research activities related to vulnerability and digital exclusion, the generation gap, children and youth, and the promotion of inclusion. Sponsored by PROVULDIG2-CM, the alliance allows for interaction among the groups and the exchange of knowledge in order to encourage quality research, and to promote the dissemination of results at the national and international levels.
The PROVULDIG2-CM network will promote the mobility of its researchers, the transfer of knowledge, and the acquisition of talented professionals, thereby fostering the creation of spaces for interaction and offering visibility to the activities.
The activities of PROVULDIG2-CM are being financed by the Autonomous Region of Madrid within the programme of R & D activities in the Social Sciences and Humanities. More specifically, the line of research falls under the heading of “Demographic and Social Change; Integrated Societies in a Globalised World”.
Simultaneously, PROVULDIG2-CM is also being co-financed by the European Social Fund under the Heading Objective 10: “Investment in Education, Skills Development, and Lifelong Learning”, for the 2014-2020 programme period.
